What to Consider Before Purchasing Educational Software

There are many considerations in the purchase of educational software. These factors are only guidelines, but make you evaluate the influence of different factors to your choices.

These are not listed in a certain order, but make sure you think about your responses to these carefully before making your purchase. Your enjoyment and success will profit from a little homework done before buying.

  • Return and Exchange Policies: Will the supplier accept returns? Is it easy to return a product? If the software you received does not fit your needs or can't run on your system, you'll need to exchange your program for one that will make you happy.
  • Availability: If possible, find out if the merchandise is in stock. Learn about your shipping options. Is the item available for immediate download?
  • Is it going to be interesting to the user? Find software that is self-paced and features a favorite interactive storybook or cartoon character
  • Age of user: Will your toddler or college student be using the product? Be sure the software is appropriate for the age of the user. Maybe Sponge Bob Squarepants can teach your children typing skills, but you probably could use a more adult learn to type program!
  • Requirements: Is your computer compatible with the system requirements? A good educational software will let you know the requirements your computer must have to run the program effectively. Make certain you look over this thoroughly.
  • Searching for software programs by name or by topic? If you know the software you are looking for, then you've likely already done some research. But, if the only thing you know is that you want it to help you  learn to speak Spanish, then carefully review the options that are available.
  • Is it suited to the user's learning style? Does your child best learn by playing games or by solving puzzles? Find software programs that feature these types.
  • Cost: Have you found the best price for the program? Look at other educational software sites to get a comparison of prices as well as shipping costs. Also note features like no sales tax states and free shipping.

Considering these points will help make sure that you and your kids will make the choice that will optimize the learning experience and the usage of your product.
